Counselling Surrey Downs vs Therapy Surrey Downs.. what is the difference?
The terms ‘counselling’ and ‘therapy’ are used interchangeably, but aren’t the same thing. At Centre for Psychology in Surrey Downs, we do offer some integrated counselling, but only for select clients. Most of our service is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is evidence-based and targets specific mental health challenges. This therapy is more short-term and addresses day-to-day issues or difficulties with thoughts, feelings, behaviours or physical symptoms. Counselling gives you an open space to talk about your past or problematic relationships and is not as focused on the day-to-day.
Centre for Psychology is an NHS Talking Therapies service comprising of CBT Therapists, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Counselling Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists, and Assistant Psychologists, helping individuals improve and maintain their psychological wellbeing. We have five referral centres in Surrey to support you with your mental health. If you need therapy in the Surrey Downs, then you are on the right page. We work with individuals aged 17+, either individually or in group settings. We have two routes for referral for therapy in the Surrey Downs and surrounding areas. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a therapy used to explore the thoughts we experience and how our behaviours, physical symptoms and emotions are all connected. You would engage in CBT with either a CBT Therapist or Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, and we can offer this either individually or in a group setting. .
Integrative Psychotherapy
Integrative Psychotherapy is offered to some of our clients who have suffered sexual assault. It uses a wider range of techniques, drawing from CBT, counselling, ACT and more, to support individuals with their needs where just CBT may not be as suitable.
Long Term Health Conditions
Long-term health conditions (LTCs) can be extremely debilitating and affect our mental health as well as our physical health. At Centre for Psychology, we have specially trained therapists who can deliver tailored therapy to individuals whose LTCs are impacting their mental health, using a range of therapeutic techniques including CBT and ACT approaches.
Group Therapy
We offer a range of therapy groups that cover a wide variety of mental health difficulties, such as Living Well with Anxiety, Coping with Worry and Low Mood, Improving Self-esteem, Pain Management, and many more. Group therapy can be a validating and reassuring setting where you can learn CBT based techniques on how to manage your symptoms and improve your mental health, whilst being able to relate with others who are experiencing similar problems.
Anxiety
Anxiety can become a problem if our safety mechanism (fight or flight) is triggered by something when there is no real threat and it begins to impact our daily life. Symptoms can include increased sweating, increased heart rate or heart palpitations, nausea, chest pains, feeling faint, digestive/stomach issues and more.
Depression
Depression is a very common mental health difficulty many people face at one point in their lives. We can feel unhappy, sad, stuck, stressed, ambivalent, or we can feel very little. Often we feel like there is nothing we can do to change our circumstances. CBT can help to identify negative patterns of thoughts and behaviours to break the cycle of depression.

What is Therapy?
Throughout life, we encounter many different changes and challenges within our daily lives, relationships, employment, and environment. These can all have an impact on our mental health, but we can also begin to struggle with our mental health for no identifiable reason. Therapy helps to support you through your difficulties, helping to bring back balance and well-being within your life. Therapy can be a useful tool to help support you with your mental health and is tailored to your unique experience. Therapy can provide a non-judgemental space to explore your thoughts and feelings, and develop coping mechanisms and strategies to help you move forward.
At Centre for Psychology, we are specialists in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Integrative Psychotherapy, but we can also draw on other modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and more. Types of Therapy
Centre for Psychology has a wide range of therapists helping an even wider range of clients with many different mental health needs. No two people are the same, but sometimes their experiences are very similar. Our therapists come from a range of backgrounds and specialties, covering different types of therapy to best support our varied clients.
Our therapies:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – CBT is used to explore the thoughts we experience and how our behaviours, physical symptoms and emotions are all connected. It works to identify and break unhelpful patterns of thoughts and behaviours we can all get stuck in from time to time. We use Trauma-Focused CBT for our clients who have experienced traumatic events and can draw on additional therapeutic interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and more.
- Integrative Psychotherapy – this is delivered by our Counselling Psychologists at Centre for Psychology and draws on CBT, counselling techniques, and many more. This therapy is specifically for our clients who have experienced sexual assault where CBT is not the most effective or suitable therapy for them.

Our Therapists in Surrey Downs
At Centre for Psychology, we have therapists available to help people over the age of 17 with a wide range of mental health difficulties.
Our therapists have many years of experience and cover a range of qualifications such as CBT Therapists, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Counselling Psychologists, and Clinical Psychologists. Our therapists also undergo further training and Continued Professional Development to train in additional specialties and keep up to date on the best practices for mental health support. We have Champions who research and advocate for many specific client populations such as those with long-term physical health conditions, LGBTQ+, those from ethnic minority backgrounds, older adults, young people, perinatal, and more.
As part of their professional status, our therapists continually embrace additional training. We also partner with Surrey University and are funded by NHS England to train future generations of highly qualified staff in psychology and related disciplines.

As a service we like to keep our waiting lists as short as possible, therefore we require you to attend all your sessions and we request that you let us know in advance if you are unable to attend an appointment so that your slot can be offered to another client. If you do not attend your appointment and we do not hear from you on that day you may be discharged from our service back to the care of your GP. We do understand that you may have to cancel an appointment due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., illness) but please let us know.
You can refer yourself by telephone or email. We also accept referrals that come to us from your GP and other external organisations that know your needs. One of our Assistant Psychologists will guide you through the process.
Following your assessment, we aim to offer an initial treatment session within 6 working weeks. Our assistant psychologists work daily on our waiting lists and will contact you by telephone when an appointment becomes available that matches your availability. You are likely to be seen sooner if you are flexible on your appointment time/location. Please let us know if you are able to accept a ‘short notice’ appointment.
It is always helpful to keep us updated about your personal circumstances using the contact details you have been given.
Our aim is to offer you an assessment within 10 working days of your referral to our service. Your assessment will usually be over the telephone. During your assessment, the therapist will provide you with the opportunity to explain why you have referred yourself to the service and what you would like support with. Your therapist will also require you to answer a series of questions about your current thoughts, behaviours, physical symptoms, and emotions. The therapist will work with you to discuss a treatment plan should our service be suitable for you. If our service is not the most suitable service for you, the therapist will discuss alternative services to signpost you to.
Should you be unable to attend a telephone assessment we can arrange for you to attend a face-to-face assessment. This may however be a longer wait based on therapist availability.
Psychological therapy is not like taking physical medication. We all respond differently to psychological therapy. Guidance suggests that attending six sessions of CBT is a good starting point. We ask that you attend your pre-booked sessions, engage with the out-of-session tasks and show improvement on the psychological measures. In return, we will continue to work with you.
Occasionally we may recommend that your GP refers you to a different service. If this happens your therapist will talk about the reasons for such a referral.
That’s okay, our therapists are trained to work with you at your telephone assessment to decide on what is the most appropriate form of therapy for your current difficulties.
To maintain confidentiality we would usually recommend that you attend your sessions individually, however, if you require someone to attend your sessions with you then please let us know when your initial appointment is booked so that your therapist can be informed.
We do not have creche facilities so please arrange appropriate childcare for your sessions.
We predominantly offer appointments from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. We are unable to offer individual appointments at the weekend. We do offer evening courses from 6pm-8pm including: Mindfulness and Stress Management, Anxiety and Depression Management, and our Sleep Clinic.
We are a Surrey-wide service and will always aim to offer you an appointment in a location that is accessible to you, however, you may be required to travel a short distance. The location offered to you will take into account the type of support you are accessing, your availability, and therapist availability.
As a way of increasing availability Centre for Psychology also offers telephone and video sessions which are often more convenient to attend. You will still receive the materials you need either by post or via the internet.
We do not provide support for people under the age of 17. If you are under 17 and feel you would benefit from psychological support we would encourage you to book an appointment with your GP who can refer you to the appropriate services.
If English is not your first language this does not mean that you cannot access our service. Our therapists are trained to work with clients using an interpreter which we will arrange for you. Please translate this page to another language by using the button (bottom left) on any page.
If you are registered with a qualifying GP Surgery in Surrey and over 17 years old then all your therapy is free to you. Centre for Psychology is paid by your local NHS Commissioning Group.
If you do not qualify we are still able to provide you with therapy. There are many reasons that you may wish to self-fund your therapy please contact us for our current fee structure.
